Successful Moves

Relocating Step by Step

STEP 1: Talk to building removal companies

At some stage you will require a building removal company to assist you with the move. When considering using a house mover, talk to people who have done it before and find out who they would recommend. It is important that you choose a firm with a good reputation.

STEP 2: A little piece of advice

We advise all our clients to get an independent plumber, electrician and builder to look over the building whether it's from us or privately. We also advise people to get all the connections to the building priced as well and add a couple of thousand dollars just in case.

STEP 3: Contact your local council

If you are wishing to relocate a house you must apply for a permit.

With each district these guidelines will vary. Please check with the council as to what they require.

Most councils will require:

  • Floor plans of the house
  • Site plans showing where the house will be positioned
  • Pile plans
  • Plumbing details

The council will need to inspect the house and the property at a cost to you. You may need to get the neighbours permission to site your house on the land. The council will give you a list of neighbours to ask.

You will need to obtain a building consent. If moving a house from another site you will need to obtain both a demolition consent and a building consent. If moving a house from one of our yards you will only need to obtain a building consent.

The council fees vary considerably so unfortunately we cannot give you a price list.

STEP 4: Moving your building

Brittons will come and pick up the building from its existing site and move it to its new site and place onto piles supplied by us or onto your pre-installed foundation or basement.

STEP 5: Connecting Services

Once the building has been placed on its new site the services required i.e. telephone, electrical, plumbing etc. will need to be reinstated. This is your responsibility.

Handling the paperwork
One of the key steps in ensuring a successful move is to get the paperwork handled and work with your council. You'll need some permits and consents as part of your move.
